Application Process for New At-Large Directors

Smeal At-Large Directors Application Process

All Smeal alumni may apply for consideration to serve as an At-Large Director of the Smeal Alumni Society Board. The mission of the Smeal Alumni Society is to enhance the value and reputation of Smeal by cultivating a community of active, engaged alumni; building and maintaining forums for student and alumni interaction; and providing a meaningful connection between the college and alumni.

At least 60 days prior to an election, alumni who would like to be considered as candidates to serve as an At-Large Director may complete the online application form. The selection committee will consider service to Penn State, with an emphasis on quality of service to Smeal as a volunteer for at least two years.

At the end of the form, applicants will need to upload a document addressing the following: Describe your past and current involvement with the Smeal College of Business, with an emphasis on your involvement in the last 5 years. Please include as much detail as possible in regards to the amount of time you were/are involved (e.g. a one-time event, a year-long initiative, etc.). Please also describe your reasons for applying for an At-Large Director position, and how, as an At-Large Director, you intend to contribute to the overall mission of the Smeal Alumni Society. Please limit your response to no more than 500 words.

  • The 2019 election is planned for Thursday, April 4, and the deadline for accepting nominations is 5:00 p.m. on January 31, 2019. Four (4) At-Large Director positions are available for the 2019 election. Please note that this is an updated number of open positions from the email that was sent on December 11 announcing that the application window was open.
  • The Smeal Alumni Society Constitution allows the slate of nominees to be no larger than twice the amount of open positions (excluding incumbents). The 2019 voting slate can feature up to eight (8) candidates.
  • The Executive Committee will meet in February to review all of the candidates who have submitted an application, and determine qualification on the slate. The Committee will consider service to Penn State, with an emphasis on quality of service to Smeal as a volunteer for at least two years.
  • Each candidate will be contacted after the February Executive Committee meeting, to let them know if they were chosen for the slate.
  • The current Board of Directors will conduct the election during the Spring Board Meeting on Thursday, April 4, and the new Board members will be announced at Impact Smeal Day in the Open Board meeting on Friday, April 5.
