Michael Q. McGowan Memorial Award for Community Service Guidelines

This award is given in honor of the nephew of a Smeal alumnus who loved Penn State. The nephew was a successful entrepreneur, who left a lasting legacy in his hometown community.

Number of Awards
Two awards are given each year, assuming the nominees are approved by the selection committee.

Eligibility
Smeal sophomores and juniors, including those students in the Division of Undergraduate Studies. Current Ex-Officio Directors are not eligible.

Criteria
Honors a Smeal sophomore or junior who has demonstrated outstanding community service to either Penn State or their hometown community. The recipient receives a monetary award.

Nominations
Nominations are solicited from Smeal faculty, staff, student organizations, and current members of the Smeal Alumni Society.

Selecting Body
The selection committee includes, but is not limited to, the Smeal Alumni Society Board’s Executive Committee, the At-Large Directors, and Smeal’s Director of Alumni Relations.

Timeline
Nominations are typically sought in the early fall. The award is presented to the recipient in a formal ceremony during the annual Smeal Alumni Society Board’s Awards program held each spring.
