Guidelines for the Gerald I. Susman Sustainability Leadership Award

Number of Awards
One award is given each year, assuming a nominee is approved by the selection committee.

Criteria
Nominees should demonstrate a commitment to sustainability through their professional and/or volunteer accomplishments. Their achievements should support the college's strategic goal of accelerating the integration of sustainability in business. Please keep in mind Smeal College of Business’ definition of sustainability includes business activities that address social and economic injustice and/or those directed toward environmental problems. The college’s complete definition for sustainability is: “the way companies manage financial, social, and environmental risks and opportunities to ensure resiliency over time, creating markets, communities, and businesses that thrive because they are intimately connected to healthy economic, social, and environmental systems."

It is preferred that nominees are a graduate of the Smeal College of Business or Penn State. Individuals external to Penn State may be considered on a case-by-case basis. At-Large Directors of the Smeal Alumni Society Board are not eligible. 
 
Nominations
Nominations are solicited from Smeal faculty, staff, students, and alumni. 

Selection Committee
The selection committee includes members of the Smeal Alumni Society Board and Smeal’s Director of Alumni Relations.

Timeline
Nominations are due by Friday, October 11, 2024. The award is presented to the recipient in a ceremony during the annual Smeal Alumni Awards program held each spring.
