FinTech Group

FinTech made great strides at Penn State during the 2024-2025 academic year. First, the Finance department launched a new undergraduate class called Finance and Technology that provided more than 60 students with a rigorous deep dive into the FinTech industry. Taught by Stefan Lewellen, the Stuart and Michele Rothstein Early Career Professor and an Assistant Professor of Finance, the class was well-received by students and benefitted significantly from substantial industry input during the design process. Particularly valuable input was provided by Jeff Gido ’94, Partner and Global Head of FinTech Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs, who also visited the class both virtually and in person. The class also welcomed visits from numerous guests including John Strackhouse ’79, Vice Chairman at Caldwell Partners, Henry L. Ines ’98, CEO and Founder of Chainparency, and Dean Cory Phelps.

The FinTech Group also grew in leaps and bounds during the 2024-2025 year. Headed by Michelle Zheng ’26, the club grew significantly in membership and established a number of working groups, each focused on a specific part of FinTech (equities, ETFs, VC, tech, etc.). As part of these efforts, the club has started to run a paper portfolio of FinTech investments. During 2024-2025, the group also held numerous general body meetings that educated members about the FinTech industry and about how to analyze and value FinTech companies. The group also welcomed a number of FinTech industry visitors, including Alex DeLitta and Gabriella Tolotta from JPMorgan and David Lin and Ben Zhu from Linvest21.

The pinnacle of both the class and the club’s activities in 2024-2025 was the launch of the inaugural Penn State FinTech App Competition, which took place on Friday, April 25th. The competition featured 10 student groups presenting novel FinTech app ideas to a panel of distinguished judges including Jeff Gido ’94, Jason Barg ’04, Partner at Lovell Minnick Partners, Charlie DeBow ’01, Managing Director at JustPark, and Glenn Fodor, CFA, CFO of Bill360. The top three teams collected not only bragging rights but also $8,000 in prize money made possible by the Jeff and Wendy Gido – Goldman Sachs Distinction in Financial Technology Fund.

In the coming year, the class and the club look to educate even more students about this growing part of the economy, and there are plans to turn the App Competition into a nationwide competition featuring teams from schools all over the country. Stay tuned!
