Welcoming many back to the Business Building
It will be gratifying to see many of you in the Business Building next week as fall semester commences. Our voices may be a bit muffled and our smiles obscured by masks, but at least we will be able to see eye to eye. Before we all settle into predictable patterns of the semester, I wanted to thank the Smeal community for its exemplary work during the past 18 months. It hasn’t been easy, but your hard work and dedication have allowed us to navigate a pandemic with remarkable success. Thank you all for what you have contributed to our mission.
Welcome back celebration today
Faculty and staff are invited to attend today’s “Welcome Back” event, beginning at 4 p.m. on the Business Building Meadow. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.
Don Hambrick receives award from Strategic Management Society

More information about the CK Prahalad Award and SMS’s recognition of Don can be found online.
Staff Performance Review
The 2021-2022 performance review cycle has kicked off! Please check your Workday inbox for a notification titled "Set Content: 2021-2022 Setting Goals and Expectations." Following the instructions provided, you should complete the Set Goals phase of the performance review cycle in Workday by entering the goals you developed in collaboration with your supervisor. See the Aug. 11 email from Michelle Darnell regarding the Smeal unit-wide Honor & Integrity goal. The sooner you enter your goals, the sooner you can focus on taking action to complete them. Goals should be entered no later than August 31.
Are you a Hiring Manager or Manager Recruiting Support (MRS) who does a lot of part-time hiring?
If so, you should check out the new Part Time Hiring web page specifically for Managers. This new web page offers managers and MRSs specific resources at their fingertips, as it relates to part-time hiring. On the new web page there is an area for training, resources, and frequently asked questions.
Do you know someone who rocks? Nominate them!
Each month the Smeal Staff Advisory Committee names a You Rock! Award recipient. You can nominate a co-worker for the You Rock! Award online.

Question from faculty
Aug. 31 is approaching rapidly, and I am trying to decide whether to confirm my acceptance of the one-year extension of the provisional tenure period due to COVID-19. What will happen if I confirm my acceptance of the extension?
All tenure-line faculty who were in their probationary period during calendar year 2020 are eligible to confirm acceptance of the extension of the probationary period until April 1 of the penultimate year in the probationary period. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at vpfa@psu.edu.
If you confirm acceptance of the extension by Aug. 31, 2021, your tenure clock will be immediately adjusted and any formal review you have scheduled for the 2021-2022 academic year (e.g., 2nd or 4th year review) will take place in 2022-2023. If you are going up for your sixth-year review, this deadline does not apply as the confirmation of the extension for those in their penultimate year must be received by April 1 of that year. Faculty who wish to confirm acceptance of the extension may do so by completing this form.
