Center for the Study of Financial Markets (CSFM)

The Center for the Study of Financial Markets is dedicated to the support and promotion of academic research in the operation, governance, and performance of global financial markets. The Center is particularly interested in sponsoring research relevant to the operation of U.S. public securities markets.

Center Activities

The Center dedicates its resources to the promotion of excellence in financial research at Penn State. The Center supports faculty and student research with grants used for travel, data, computer equipment, software and other research related expenditures. The Center also funds graduate assistantships to support graduate students in Finance and provide research support to the Department of Finance and the Smeal College Trading Room. The Center also supports the Finance Seminar Series, featuring research presentations by leading scholars from other leading institutions.

Center Administration

The Center for the Study of Financial Markets is directed by Professor William Kracaw, the David and Shirley Sykes Professor of Finance and Department Chair. The director is appointed by the Dean for a period of five years. In addition, a Faculty Advisory Committee, consisting of 3 faculty in Finance, is appointed by the Director. The Committee provides advice regarding resource allocations and activities sponsored by the Center.


The Center for the Study of Financial Markets at Penn State has an endowment in excess of $1 million, made possible through the generous support of an anonymous donor.
