Net Impact Undergraduate Chapter

The Penn State Net Impact Undergraduate (PSNIUG) chapter is affiliated with Net Impact National and housed within Smeal. The mission of the group is to inspire, educate, and equip individuals to use the power of business to create a more socially and environmentally sustainable world. The group currently has 200 members from various majors within Smeal and also business-related majors outside of the college.

The group organizes a number of projects and events both on campus and within the community to further its mission. A few of those initiatives include:

  • Sustainability Consulting Program: Provides an opportunity for students to use their business skills to help local nonprofits and businesses. Consultants engage in part-time consulting projects related to marketing, business planning and operations, strategic planning, and other business needs with a focus on sustainability.
  • Corporate Citizenship Conference: An annual event that focuses on the topic of sustainability, corporate social responsibility, and diversity in a corporate context. This year's inaugural event brought nearly 20 companies, including KPMG, to the Penn State University Park campus to present policies and what is being done within these areas in their own organization.
  • Ink Cartridge Project: Partnering with local business, Cartridge World, the group has set up a system for recycling ink cartridges and their packaging in the Business Building. In addition to the recycling effort, the group also intends to look at the purchasing data for the cartridges and match it to what is being recycled. The goal is to make the cartridges and packaging completely zero waste within the college and expand the program to other colleges at the University.

In the News: The Penn State Smeal undergraduate student chapter of Net Impact won the organization's national Small Steps, Big Wins Campus Challenge and was recognized as one of the top three undergraduate chapters in the nation.
