Application

All applicants should understand that the admissions process is competitive. The Accounting Department at the Smeal College of Business base acceptance decisions on the following evaluative criteria: 

  • Undergraduate academic record with a particular emphasis being placed on courses that are indicators of aptitude for a rigorous accounting program
  • GMAT score. The submission of a GMAT score is optional for current Penn State students. The submission of a GMAT score is optional for applicants from outside of Penn State with a cumulative GPA at the time of application of 3.50 or higher. Applicants from outside of Penn State with a cumulative GPA at the time of application of less than 3.50 must submit a GMAT score.
  • TOEFL or IELTS score Current Penn State students are exempt from providing an updated TOEFL or IELTS score. Applicants from outside of Penn State are only exempt from providing a TOEFL score if they have graduated from a U.S.-based institution prior to the time of application.
  • Responses to essays submitted within the application
  • Current resume submitted within the application
  • Two professional or academic references
  • Formal admissions interview if requested by the Admissions Committee (formal admissions interviews are conducted on an invitation-only basis)
  • In certain cases, the Accounting Department may also require an applicant to successfully complete an exam that tests basic accounting knowledge

The application to begin the One-Year MAcc Program in Fall 2019 will be made available in September 2018. 

* A “complete application package” as referenced in this program website includes the application itself plus any required supplemental application materials as detailed on the page entitled “Application Requirements.”  Complete application packages received prior to an admissions deadline will be held and will then be reviewed by the Admissions Committee after the deadline.  Incomplete application packages will not be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.  Applicants will be given up to one week after an application deadline to submit any missing supplemental application materials.  Any application that remains incomplete after this one week extension will not be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.
