Unilever, a CSCR™ Corporate Sponsor, has become the first packaged goods company to publicly disclose the worldwide sources of the palm oil used in its 400-plus food and HBC brands. Palm oil has traditionally posed many challenges as it touches many points before final production, but Unilever believes they can create a fully traceable supply chain across the direct suppliers involved in palm oil production. Before reaching Unilever factories, the fruit is passed through middlemen, agents, processing mills and refineries, typically in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Nigeria, Colombia and Ghana.

“A lot of people think if you outsource your value chain, you can outsource your responsibilities,” Chief Executive Officer, Paul Polman, said during this year’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “We need to be at the forefront of change. Unilever is committed to greater transparency and continues to work with our partners to drive positive change in the palm oil industry.”

In addition to expressing concerns regarding deforestation and human rights abuse, Unilever is striving to make complete transparency and digital records of the entire supply chain operations as well as being a public advocate for blockchain technology.

Unilever was also ranked 5th on the list of the Top 100 Consumer Goods Companies for 2017 with $55.5 billion in revenue.
