Frequently Asked Questions for Alumni Volunteers of Smeal 2+2 Students

Information specific to the 2+2@Smeal Program at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business.

What is the 2+2@Smeal Program?

The 2+2@Smeal Program is an academic pathway at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business that allows students to complete their first two years at a Commonwealth Campus before transitioning to University Park (UP) for their final two years to complete their business degree.

Who are the 2+2 Students?

The 2+2 students are undergraduates who choose, or are assigned, to start their studies at a Commonwealth Campus and then move to UP to complete their business education. They benefit from smaller class sizes, accessible faculty and tuition savings early in their college career before joining the larger Smeal community. Approximately 30% of all Smeal undergraduates are 2+2 students.

What is Smeal Direct?

Smeal Direct offers guaranteed, direct admission to a business major in Smeal upon university acceptance, provided the prospective student selects a Smeal major on their application and UP as their graduating campus. Students can start at UP or any Commonwealth Campus as 2+2 students. Prospective students should apply directly to Smeal as the second-year entry process is competitive, limited, and subject to availability.

Which Commonwealth Campuses will Remain Open?

The campuses confirmed to remain open after the 2026/2027 school year are Abington, Altoona, Beaver, Behrend, Berks, Brandywine, Great Valley, Greater Allegheny, Harrisburg, Hazleton, Lehigh Valley, Schuylkill, and Scranton.

What are Unique Challenges for 2+2 Students?

  • Students arrive at University Park fall of their junior year and need to adjust quickly to the new campus and prepare for early fall events like activity fairs, career fairs, interviews, etc.
  • It is difficult to obtain leadership positions in student orgs when joining as a junior
  • Some Smeal experiential learning experiences may not be open to junior students
  • Internships as rising seniors are difficult to secure without the above preparation and opportunities.
