Profiting for a Purpose: The Rise of Social Entrepreneurship and Sustainability in Business

As the earth’s population continues to climb past 9 billion people this century, the World Economic Forum suggests that the world will need 40 percent more clear water, 50 percent more food, and over 50 percent more energy. Businesses will be a driving factor in meeting these needs in a socially just and environmentally sustainable manner. Smeal students are increasingly interested in harnessing the power of business for positive social and environmental change.  And the college is even starting a new research and education center focused in this quickly growing area of social impact and sustainability. Smeal has already reached more than 14,000 students with required sustainability course and engaged more than 800 MBAs from the top business schools across the country with an annual sustainability case competition. Hear about these initiatives, careers in social impact, and much more. And we want to hear from you as well. Bring your experiences, questions and ideas! This session will feature two student leaders from the Smeal MBA Program: Orlando Acevedo and and Sophia Schuster, along with Erik Foley, Smeal’s Director of Sustainability.
