Impact Smeal Day provides alumni with the opportunity to return to campus and reconnect with the college through a number of activities such as interacting with current students, networking with other alumni, and hearing college updates. The day is designed so that you can come and go, according to your schedule. The event is hosted by the Smeal Alumni Society Board.

After reviewing the sessions below, COMPLETE THE ONLINE REGISTRATION. Once a session is at capacity, it will no longer appear on the registration site. Dress is business casual. Session locations will be communicated closer to the date of the event.

Alumni Career Services Coaching Session (1-hour sessions offered throughout the day on 10/17 & 10/18)

We encourage attendees to engage with Smeal Alumni Career Services as part of their Impact Smeal Day experience. 1:1 career coaching sessions will be available Oct. 17-18 on a first come, first served basis, so please register early and include mention of "Impact Smeal Day" in the last field of the form. Please note that one of our coaches works remotely in Boston, so it may be a unique virtual connection in which case you'd bring your laptop and we would provide a private space.

If you're in Happy Valley on Thursday evening, join the Smeal Alumni Society Board at Champs Downtown in State College for a casual gathering with drinks and appetizers. Champs Downtown is located at 139 South Allen Street. Please indicate whether you can attend on the registration form.

Be Paired with an Alumni Ambassador

If you are a new alumni volunteer to Smeal, you can be connected with a Smeal Alumni Ambassador (another alumnus/na who has volunteered for a number of years). The Alumni Ambassador will help you connect with other attendees and answer any questions you might have before, during, and after Impact Smeal Day. Please indicate your interest on the registration form.

Be part of a panel of alumni who will chat with students about topics related various business careers. While this class focuses on Global Marketing, this particular professor is open to panelists from all industries and is eager to expose his students who can discuss a variety of career paths, as well as share personal experiences and advice with the students. Observe the Nittany Lion Fund

Watch the students in the $9.5M investor-owned, student-managed Nittany Lion Fund make their semi-annual presentation to investors and the Board of directors. Visitors are encouraged to participate and ask questions.

Explore the LEMA Lab

The Laboratory for Economic Management and Auctions (LEMA) provides a laboratory environment for the study of questions in business and economics in particular. The experimental economics laboratory allows researchers to more clearly identify how real human behavior reacts to changes in environments, institutions, and policy. Thus, laboratory results have the potential to provide practical and realistic guidance to both managers and policy makers. LEMA is the only dedicated experimental economics facility at Penn State. This session will briefly introduce the exciting and growing field of laboratory experiments in business and economics and highlight the accomplishments of LEMA researchers. A number of hands on simulations will be offered to demonstrate the kinds of experiments conducted in the lab.

Give Advice to Students - Challenging Situations & Conversations in the Workplace

The purpose of this session is to create an interactive discussion between alumni and students in attendance about challenges they will face in the workplace related to interpersonal relationships, ethical dilemmas, handling mistakes and other similar topics. Alumni in the audience will be encouraged to share their insights and experiences, and student will be encouraged to ask questions.

Survey Says: Student Organizations and Alumni Interaction

Last spring, many of Smeal's student organizations took part in a survey asking the student leaders how they currently interact with alumni and how they would like to interact with alumni in the future. Come be part of a discussion with some of these student leaders and members of the Alumni Engagement Committee to continue to discover ways in which alumni volunteers can help student organizations be successful. 

Give Advice to Students - Taking the Work Out of Networking

The purpose of this session is to create an interactive discussion between alumni and students in attendance about the importance of networking. The idea is to help students understand that it doesn’t have to be an intimidating activity. Alumni in the audience are encouraged to share their experiences and advice. The final 15 minutes of the session will be an opportunity for students to practice networking with alumni in a supportive setting.

Profiting for a Purpose: The Rise of Social Entrepreneurship and Sustainability in Business

As the earth’s population continues to climb past 9 billion people this century, the World Economic Forum suggests that the world will need 40 percent more clear water, 50 percent more food, and over 50 percent more energy. Businesses will be a driving factor in meeting these needs in a socially just and environmentally sustainable manner. Smeal students are increasingly interested in harnessing the power of business for positive social and environmental change.  And the college is even starting a new research and education center focused in this quickly growing area of social impact and sustainability. Smeal has already reached more than 14,000 students with required sustainability course and engaged more than 800 MBAs from the top business schools across the country with an annual sustainability case competition. Hear about these initiatives, careers in social impact, and much more. And we want to hear from you as well. Bring your experiences, questions and ideas! This session will feature two student leaders from the Smeal MBA Program, along with Erik Foley, Smeal’s Director of Sustainability.

Whether you're looking for a job, advancement, employee, or marketing outlet, it's vital to learn how to navigate LinkedIn effectively for the best use of your time.  This session will include a presentation with the latest tips followed by a discussion on how we're all using this powerful platform strategically.  Register early and - upon looking you up! - the session will be loosely customized to the occupations and industries represented.

Alumni will get the chance to provide current and rising sophomores with tips and resources for getting ahead of the career prep curve during a critical year in their Smeal journey.

Be part of a panel of alumni who will chat with students about topics related various business careers. While this class focuses on Global Marketing, this particular professor is open to panelists from all industries and is eager to expose his students who can discuss a variety of career paths, as well as share personal experiences and advice with the students. Be part of a panel of alumni who will chat with students about topics related to the accounting profession. the alumni panelists will be featured for half the class, and then the rest of the class will be a lecture that the panelists can observe, if they wish. This particular professor is hoping that panelists can share personal experiences and advice with the students, with the possibility of their being a focus on Flexible Budgets & Performance Analysis (the topic they will be studying that day). Explore the Supply Chain Lab

The Supply Chain Lab provides cutting-edge technology and specialized software for students and faculty to study, simulate, and test the key relationships in end-to-end supply chains. This interactive session will allow participants to learn about the lab's features from a Smeal faculty member.

A History of Penn State Inventions & Innovations

Penn State's Special Projects Librarian and Archivist Jackie Esposito will share a historical perspective on Penn State's contributions to the Commonwealth, the nation, and the world. This is an exciting opportunity to learn new facts about your alma mater!

Attend a Committee Breakout

The Alumni Society Board is made up of a variety of working Committees that help enhance the efforts of the Alumni Relations Office. The Board welcomes insight and expertise from volunteers on these Committees, and Impact Smeal Day provides an opportunity for alumni to meet face-to-face to discuss current projects and initiatives.

A very brief overview of each Committee will take place at 3:30 p.m., and then alumni can choose which Committee they would like to join for the remainder of the session. After Impact Smeal Day, alumni will have the option to continue volunteering for this Committee, if they wish. 

Take a 20-minute Tour of the Business Building

This will be a student-led tour of one of the most beautiful business school facilities in the world.
