Dear Smeal College Alumni and Friends:

As we rapidly near the midpoint of the semester, things are as busy as ever here at Smeal. We just completed our accreditation visit with the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)—the association that provides internationally recognized accreditation standards for business schools—and the college is hard at work on its strategic plan for the next five years.

I first want to take a moment to congratulate Jennifer Crispell, who--after a competitive search--has been named the new director of alumni relations. You may already know Jen from her position as special events assistant in the Development and Alumni Relations Office. I’m confident that her wealth of experience will provide a smooth transition as she enters this new role, as well as strong leadership into the future.

In addition, you may be proud to know that applications to Smeal at University Park are at an all-time high this year, with more than 7,000 students already vying for spots in the college—allowing us greater selectivity in extending offers. We had our first Accepted Students Program earlier this month.

Finally, I want to encourage our alumnae to consider registering for the annual Powerful Women Paving the Way conference, which is organized by our Women in Business student group. The conference is a professional development opportunity that also facilitates networking connections with our students and other alumnae. Speakers and special guests for the conference will include:

  • Melissa Gonzalez, CEO and founder of Lion’esque Group
  • Bob Moritz, chairman and senior partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers
  • Beth Brooke, global vice chair of public policy at EY
  • Kim Dixon, COO and executive vice president of FedEx

Our active alumni network is a point of pride for us here at the Smeal College, and there are always many opportunities for you to get involved, including the upcoming Impact Smeal Day. Keep up with what's happening at Smeal through social media—follow us on Facebook and Twitter or join the Smeal alumni group on LinkedIn—view the latest news on our website, or sign up for the new Penn State Smeal College of Business Newswire to have the latest news delivered to your inbox each week. We hope to hear from you or see you soon.

Best regards,
Charles H. Whiteman
