Happy New Year!

Here's the latest issue of SMEAL Zine, a monthly electronic magazine designed to keep alumni and friends in touch with the latest news and information from Penn State's Smeal College of Business's nationally ranked programs and world-renowned research centers.

MOVE OVER eBAY

Second-year MBA students in Smeal College can now bid for class slots online thanks to an auction system developed by two professors in the College. Smeal College is the first in the country to put such a system online. Read the Associated Press story on the online auction at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/innews/dec00/apmba.html

RESEARCHER FINDS PERPLEXING TRENDS IN AUDITING

In order to protect themselves from litigation, auditors are more likely to detect and correct overstatements than understatements on financial statements. That's according to a study by Orie Barron, associate professor of accounting. "This results in audit outcomes that are inconsistent with the industry's ethical standards," says Barron. WEBSITE GIVES FREE SOFTWARE TO QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROFESSIONALS

Graduate students in the College have created a Web site that could become a preeminent site for quality practitioners. Freequality.org provides free of charge-all the charts, selectors, diagram generators, and other tools that quality improvement professionals may need.
