STUDENTS AID NEW YORK RELIEF
Smeal College undergraduate students teamed with area restaurants, eateries and other establishments and raised $6,000 for recovery efforts in New York and Washington, D.C. with "PSU Night Out" on Thursday, November 8, 2001. A story on the fundraising effort is online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/nov01/fundrais.html

PUBLIC FIRMS AND TAKEOVERS
When a firm goes public with an IPO, conventional wisdom and past research suggest managers might take action to drive up stock prices to help with the eventual sale of the firm. Surprisingly, a new study shows managers take action when they go public, but only to make sure they retain control.

INSIDERS AND EARNINGS
Two accounting professors are co-authors of a new study that offers strong evidence that insiders anticipate earnings trends up to two years in the future, and trade to profit from this information. "Our study provides evidence that insiders possess, and trade upon, knowledge of specific and economically significant forthcoming accounting disclosures as long as two years prior to the disclosure," says Bin Ke, assistant professor of accounting. More information on the findings is online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/oct01/earnings.html
