Smeal Research: Family Crucial To Beating The Stress Of Moving Abroad
A recent study by David Harrison, distinguished professor of management at Smeal, published in the Academy of Management Journal sheds fresh light on the way people working in a foreign country handle the stress of their assignment. Specifically, the study refutes previous evidence and conventional wisdom that prior experience working overseas and the ability to speak the native language are the most important factors in adjusting to work in a foreign country. Rather, Harrison and his co-authors find that spouse adjustment is the most important variable in determining how a married expatriate will adjust to the stresses of living and working in a foreign environment. Smeal Expert: 'GM's Future More Uncertain Than Ever'
The decision by General Motors to close 12 plants and lay off 30,000 workers is just more bad news for the struggling U.S. automobile industry, according to Terrence Guay, clinical assistant professor of international business at Smeal. "The U.S. automotive industry is a tale of two industries," he says, "a declining one comprised of GM and Ford and a competitive and promising one consisting of Japanese and European firms who make cars in the United States and employ an increasing number of U.S. workers."
