Smeal Wins Multiyear Research Award To Study Manufacturing
In a five-year award of up to $3-to-$5 million in cumulative funding, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has provided initial support of $400,000 to Smeal for several studies on the performance of small manufacturing firms. The initiative, led by Professor Gerald Susman, Director of Smeal's Center for the Management of Technological and Organizational Change, will involve collaboration between four of the college's research centers, as well as Penn State's College of Engineering. IBM Supports Launch Of Smeal Supply Chain Lab
An innovative computer laboratory simulating the operations of a complex supply chain - one of the first of two such labs in the nation - will open this fall at Smeal. The IBM-supported facility will provide hardware and software for students and faculty to study, simulate, and test the key relationships in end-to-end supply chains, and will also position Smeal to collaborate with IBM and conduct applied research and teaching. In a new study of research productivity of faculty members at 51 leading U.S. business schools, Smeal is among the top 30 in five academic disciplines, and is one of only 15 schools in the nation to place among the top three in at least one area. Smeal MBA Program Ranked 44th Globally
The Economist Intelligence Unit's 2003 "Which MBA?" guide assessing global full-time MBA programs, based on survey responses of current students and recent graduates, ranks the Smeal MBA Program 44th in the world, 28th in the United States, and 11th among public institutions. Memorial Fund Honors Memory Of Late Faculty Member
Smeal has established a memorial fund in memory of Anthony Verstraete, a Smeal faculty member who died suddenly in July at the age of 60. A member of the faculty since 1980, Verstraete taught information technology to more than 10,000 students during his career. | Gerald Susman |
Robert and Judith Klein Professor of Management
With expertise in technology and innovation management, management of teams, and management of change, Susman is Director of the Center for the Management of Technological and Organizational Change and Co-Director of the Quality and Manufacturing Management Program. He has been a consultant to many public and private organizations including the Office of Personnel Management, the National Center for Productivity and Quality of Working Life, U.S. Department of Labor, and the cities of Baltimore and San Antonio.
