Alternative View Of Media Rankings Of Business Schools

Since Business Week initiated the first ranking of business schools in 1988 (reportedly a best selling issue), many other media outlets have followed suit (e.g., U.S. News and World Report, Wall Street Journal, Economist, Financial Times, etc). Dennis Gioia, professor of organizational behavior at the Smeal College and Kevin Corley, assistant professor of organizational behavior, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, explored the ramifications of measuring educational quality through media rankings, and the positive and negative consequences of rankings on the allocation of business school resources. Gioia and Corley warn of the rankings pull that may influence business schools to promote image over substance. The study, "Being Good Versus Looking Good: Business School Rankings and the Circean Transformation From Substance to Image," was published in the inaugural issue of Academy of Management Learning & Education, Sep. 2002, Vol. (1), p 107.
