Welcome to the Smeal Zine!

Here's the latest issue of SMEAL Zine, a monthly electronic magazine designed to keep alumni and friends in touch with the latest news and information from Penn State's Smeal College of Business' nationally ranked programs and world-renowned research centers.

ALUMNI VICTIMS
The Smeal College of Business and the Penn State Alumni Association extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the victims and families of the September 11th tragedies. The events have truly saddened all of us. We have been touched by the number of alumni that have contacted us requesting information about fellow alumni, or ways they, as a member of the Penn State family, could help those affected by the tragedies. Since the requests have been overwhelming, we felt it appropriate to provide alumni with up to date information about those who have been affected. The Alumni Association is maintaining a list of the victims and information on memorial services online at http://www.alumni.psu.edu/about_us/news/default.htm#911.

Patricia (Pat) Woertz, President of Chevron Products Company and a vice president of Chevron Corporation, is ranked 8th among the "Fifty Most Powerful Women in American Business," according to Fortune magazine's annual compilation. CAREER OUTLOOK
Judy Olian, Dean of Smeal College, recently told U.S.News & World Report that "as all companies look to technology to solve their business problems, we're entering an era of 'converging economies,' in which no one will be far from the entrepreneurial action." Read the U.S.News article quoting Dr. Olian online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/innews/oct01/career.html.

E-COACHES NEEDED
E-learning's real potential as a tool for developing leaders is around interactivity and networking, but accomplishing its potential is going to take dynamic e-platforms, says Al Vicere, professor of Strategic Leadership. He envisions an e-learning future with e-coaches or personal learning consultants. He describes it online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/oct01/access.html.

LACK OF FIRMS GOING PUBLIC
The absence of IPOs following the attacks on the World Trade Center is due to the economic downturn, investor uncertainty, and possibly to investors being overly pessimistic regarding firms' values, says Michelle Lowry, assistant professor of finance. She has completed several studies on IPO volume. "Any one of those factors could cause variations in the IPO market, but now all three of the factors are in effect and that's why the IPO market is so cold." Discover more about her research online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/oct01/ipos.html.

MANAGERS CAN LEARN FROM ASIAN CRISIS
There are lessons from the recent Asian economic crisis that may help managers weather the current economic fallout in the U.S., according to research co-authored by Rajdeep Grewal, assistant professor of marketing. His recent study in the Journal of Marketing found that market orientation and strategic flexibility should be selectively emphasized in economic crisis. A brief outlining the results is online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/oct01/asnecon.html.

QMM GRADUATES ARE IN HIGH DEMAND
Penn State's Quality and Manufacturing Management (QMM) program is a collaboration of Smeal College and the College of Engineering. Graduates of the award-winning program are in high demand in the workforce. Meet graduates of the QMM program online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/oct01/qmmgrad.html

GIFT TO COLLEGE ENDOWS SMEAL CHAIR
A recent gift of $1.5 million from Ronald R. and Judith L. Davenport to establish an endowed chair in Smeal College will attract even more world-class faculty.
