Events Connect Smeal Students And Alumni

Smeal hosted two events last month to provide students with some tools and opportunities to network with high-level business executives. On Sept. 28, members of the Smeal Board of Visitors and the Alumni Society Board returned to campus to talk one-on-one with current students and participate in several panel discussions on topics ranging from forensic accounting and supply chain resiliency to succeeding on Wall Street and finding work-life balance. Research Paper Suggests Honor Codes To Improve Academic Integrity

Graduate students are cheating at an alarmingly high rate and MBA students are doing so at even higher levels, according to a new research report co-authored by Linda Treviño, Cook Fellow in Business Ethics at Smeal. She and her fellow researchers recommend that college administrators work with faculty and students to create what they call a "culture of integrity and responsibility" in their schools. At Smeal, Treviño has worked with students and administrators to design an academic honor code that emphasizes the promotion of academic integrity among students as a community value. The code is being piloted in the MBA Program this semester. For more on Treviño's findings, visit http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/sep06/ethics.html.

Study: An Overpaid CEO Often Translates To Overpaid Employees

Companies with overpaid CEOs tend to overpay other employees and may experience more employee turnover, according to a new research report co-authored by Timothy Pollock, associate professor of management at Smeal. Pollock and two colleagues from Rutgers and Stanford warn that ultimately, this systemic overpayment and turnover can negatively impact overall organizational performance and shareholder value. Pollock says that his "research shows that shareholders might want to be more careful about exorbitant CEO salaries because they tend to cost corporations far more in their payrolls and in employee turnover."
