Here's the latest issue of SMEAL Zine, a monthly electronic magazine designed to keep alumni and friends in touch with the latest news and information from Penn State's Smeal College of Business and its nationally ranked programs and world-renowned research centers.

Gene Tyworth

Tyworth is chair of Smeal’s Supply Chain and Information Systems department. His research concentrates on transportation, logistics, and supply-chain management issues. Prior to joining the Smeal college faculty in 1976, he performed transportation/logistics duties as an officer in the Air Force from 1967 to 1971. Tyworth has also served as a supply-chain consultant for companies in industries as diverse as trucking, air cargo, food products, forest products, and wire and cable.

Smeal Celebrates New Building

The Smeal community marked the opening of its new home with a ribbon-cutting celebration on Sept. 30. Students, alumni, friends, faculty, and staff joined President Graham Spanier, Board of Visitors chair Richard Struthers, Dean Judy Olian, Board of Trustees chair Cynthia Baldwin, and other special guests to commemorate the dedication of the Business Building. The full day of festivities included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, an address by former FBI director Louis Freeh, and a gala dinner honoring those who made the building possible. Survey Ranks Smeal Number One In Supply-Chain Education

A recent survey of North American supply-chain practitioners and academics ranks Smeal as the top supply-chain program in North America. The survey asked more than 1,000 professionals and 175 college and university educators to rank the top 20 programs. Smeal was ranked number one in both the practitioner and academic rankings, drawn from 154 respondents. For more information, visit http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/

Smeal Ranked By Two Prominent Business Publications

In September, The Wall Street Journal and The Economist released separate rankings of the best business schools and both included Penn State’s Smeal College of Business. The Economist ranked Smeal’s full-time MBA program 48th internationally and 25th overall in the United States. Corporate recruiters surveyed by The Wall Street Journal and Harris Interactive ranked Smeal 33rd on their regional list of MBA providers. Smeal Grad Elected To Alumni Council

Legg Mason financial adviser Cara Caruso, a 1999 graduate of Smeal, was elected this summer to the Alumni Council, the governing body of the Penn State Alumni Association. Caruso is president of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Penn State Smeal Business Club. As a student, she was president of the Penn State Marketing Association and won the Dorothy M. Olian Chosen As New Dean Of UCLA Anderson

Smeal dean Judy Olian has been named as the eighth dean of the UCLA Anderson School of Management, effective Jan. 1, 2006. During Olian’s tenure at Smeal, she oversaw the opening of the Trading Room and the launch of the Philadelphia-based Executive MBA program. Olian also led the campaign to build the college’s new 210,000-square-foot home. Smeal Welcomes New eBRC Executive Director

SSmeal is pleased to announce the appointment of John M. Jordan as executive director of the eBusiness Research Center. Jordan has a long history of advising companies on approaches to technology utilization to improve their bottom lines. Most recently, Jordan served as principal at Capgemini, a global business and technology consulting firm, where he analyzed e-commerce successes like Amazon, Linux, and eBay. Smeal Awarded Three Grants From NIST

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) awarded three research grants totaling more than $400,000 to Smeal faculty. The funds are earmarked for different projects related to the development of small and medium-sized businesses. Since 2003, Smeal has received $808,928 in NIST research grants. MBA Students Raise Hurricane Relief Funds

An ongoing fund-raiser initiated by Smeal MBA students has raised more than $4,200 in hurricane relief funds to be donated to the Red Cross. Initial donations were collected during a “Tailgate for Katrina” at Penn State’s opening football game, and the fundraising has continued with a T-Shirt sale and silent auction. Trading Room Open On Home Football Weekends

Smeal Alumni can now get a glimpse inside the new, state-of-the-art Trading Room in Smeal's new Business Building during open houses held on home football weekends. The room brings Wall Street to University Park by providing an interactive lab where students can study financial markets, stock trading, and other aspects of global business. The trading room will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to noon, every home football Saturday through the rest of the season. Reminder: Klein Symposium On Small Business And The Global Economy

Smeal will host a symposium on Oct. 14 to explore the international business strategies of small to medium-sized companies that are thriving in today’s global economy. Manuel Rosales, assistant administrator of the Office of International Trade in the Small Business Administration, will discuss how to grow small U.S. businesses through global trade. Markos Tambakeras, chairman, president and CEO of Kennametal Inc., will deliver the keynote address. Reminder: Smeal Research Center To Host Workforce Conference

Smeal’s Center for Global Business Studies will host a conference Oct. 12 - 13 focusing on the changing workforce and the ramifications these changes will have on global companies. "Workforce of the Future" will feature leading business and human-resources experts discussing workforce markets, the aging workforce, outsourcing, and technology.
