Members of the Smeal College community offer their prayers and sympathies to all affected by the terrible tragedy. The Alumni Association has established a message board on its Web site to help alumni contact friends and family who may have been affected by the tragedy, and for offers of assistance in the New York City and Washington, D.C. areas. The message board is available through the Association's Web site at http://www.alumni.psu.edu/hub/messages/default.htm.

MBA STUDENTS CHALLENGE BIG 10
It started as a challenge from one MBA student in Smeal College to the other 200 students in the MBA program: Let's raise funds for the American Red Cross and the Widows and Children's Fund of the Uniformed Firefighter's Association. Now, the philanthropic drive is going coast-to-coast as Smeal College MBA students are challenging MBA students in other Big 10 business schools to a fundraising drive. The challenge is online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/sep01/redcross.html.

RANKINGS UPDATE
U.S.News & World Report released its 2002 "Best Colleges" issue on September 6. Smeal College is tied for 10th among public universities in the same category. SMEAL CONNECTS
When the terrorists attacked, colleges nationally scrambled to provide the media with experts on terrorism, airline security, structural engineering and civil liberties. But a different message went out from Smeal College: "These attacks have hit close to home. We're checking on colleagues and caring for students. Please don't call." The heartfelt note struck a chord with the Associated Press, which devoted a story on the Smeal College and our efforts. Read the story online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/innews/sep01/attacks.html.

ADJUSTING TO GLOBAL ASSIGNMENTS

As more businesses go global and move operations and employees overseas, they must become more aware of the role spouses and families play, suggests Professor David Harrison who recently completed two studies on expatriate spouse adjustment. His research offers insights that can help companies, spouses and families adjust to international assignments. The story is online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/sep01/study.html.

WHAT INSIDERS KNOW OF FUTURE EARNINGS
Two accounting professors are co-authors of a new study that offers strong evidence that insiders anticipate earnings trends up to two years in the future, and trade to profit from this information. "Our study provides evidence that insiders possess, and trade upon, knowledge of specific and economically significant forthcoming accounting disclosures as long as two years prior to the disclosure," says Bin Ke, assistant professor of accounting in Penn State's Smeal College of Business. Learn more about the study online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/sep01/earnings.html.
