TAKEOVER DEFENSES AID MANAGERS
Many firms deploy takeover defenses when they go public, but
recent research from Laura Field, assistant professor of finance,
suggests that managers use these takeover defenses to ensure the
continuation of their personal benefits of control -- not to help
in the eventual sale of the firm by increasing expected takeover
premiums. Read more about the study at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/new/releases/aug01/takeover.html.
BEST
PAPER AWARD
The editors of the Journal of Accounting & Economics
have awarded "best paper" honors to Steven Huddart, associate
professor of accounting. The Wall Street Journal recently
incorporated his research into a news article on stock losses. For
more on the award, go to http://www.smeal.psu.edu/new/releases/aug01/huddart.html.
