Assistant Professor of Finance

With research interests in the area of empirical corporate finance, primarily focusing on the pricing and timing of initial public offerings and the effects of securities litigation on corporate financing decision, Lowry has been a member of the Smeal faculty since 2000.

Smeal Research: Lowry IPO Paper Honored

Assistant Professor of Finance Michelle Lowry’s co-authored paper in the Journal of Financial Economics – “Is the IPO Pricing Process Efficient?” – recently was honored with a Jensen Prize as one of the journal’s top papers of 2004. Smeal Welcomes New Faculty

Twelve new faculty members have been hired to join Smeal during the next academic year, marking one of the most successful hiring periods in the history of the college. Included among the new faces will be Timothy Lowe, the Smeal Chair in Supply Chain and Information Systems, and Raghu Garud, the new research director for the Farrell Center for Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship and professor of corporate innovation and entrepreneurship. Susman, Baumgartner Named To Research, Ph.D. Roles

Gerald Susman, director of Center for the Management of Technological and Organizational Change, has been named associate dean for research at the college, and Professor of Marketing Hans Baumgartner is the new director of the Smeal Ph.D. program. Susman and Baumgartner take over for Russell Barton, who stepped down at the end of June after three years as associate dean for research and Ph.D./M.S. programs. eBRC Hosts Services Innovation Workshop

Experts from academia, industry, and government gathered at Penn State in June for a workshop to explore the emerging field of services sciences. Services now constitute more than 70 percent of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product. Hosted by Smeal’s eBusiness Research Center, the event will result in a white paper on the topic. ISBM Focuses On Future Of B-to-B

Smeal’s Institute for the Study of Business Markets is working to assure future growth and advancements in the practice of business-to-business marketing. In July, ISBM will spearhead the first in a series of events designed to attract new Ph.D. students into the discipline. Executive MBA Program Introduces Non-Profit Scholarship

Smeal’s Philadelphia-based Executive MBA Program, which welcomes its fourth class of students in August, has announced the creation of a $20,000 competitive scholarship to be awarded to one incoming student or divided among multiple students who are also employees of non-profit organizations.
