Here's the latest issue of SMEAL Zine, a monthly electronic magazine designed to keep alumni and friends in touch with the latest news and information from Penn State's Smeal College of Business and its nationally ranked programs and world-renowned research centers.

William Ross, Professor of Marketing:
William Ross, professor of marketing at Smeal, has been named the next director of the college's Ph.D. program, effective July 1. Prior to joining the Smeal faculty in July 2000, Ross served as assistant dean for research and doctoral programs and director of the Ph.D. program in business administration at Temple University's Fox School of Business and Management. His research interests involve the application of behavioral decision theory, cognitive psychology, and the examination of how individuals make decisions. Ross' teaching experience includes marketing and business ethics courses in undergraduate, MBA, executive MBA, doctoral, and executive education programs. Ross holds a Ph.D. in business from Duke University and a bachelor's degree in history from Wake Forest University.
Senior Sendoff Welcomes Newest Smeal Alumni
Most of Smeal's 1,066 graduating seniors and their families attended the college's second annual Senior Sendoff celebration and pre-commencement brunch on May 20. Dean James Thomas and commencement speaker Martha Jordan '76, partner in the international law firm of Latham & Watkins LLP and chair of the Smeal Board of Visitors, offered congratulatory remarks. Dean Thomas To Meet Smeal Alumni And Friends In Texas
Dean James Thomas will visit Dallas and Austin, Texas, this month to meet with area alumni and friends of Smeal, discuss trends currently affecting business education, and share some of his vision for the future of the college. The receptions also provide an opportunity for guests to network with fellow alumni and connect with old friends and colleagues. Thomas will be in Dallas on June 18 and Austin on June 19. Student Organization Volunteers In Chile
A Smeal student organization recently took part in an international service trip to Chile, leading business and language courses for Chilean students and studying the nation's economy with a former government official. Four members of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) spent a week in the country living with host families to absorb the local culture. It's the third time that Penn State's SIFE chapter has embarked on such a service trip. In the past, the group visited Ecuador and Puerto Rico. Research Paper Reconciles Globalization Risks, Opportunities For U.S. Defense Industry
Globalization is causing change in nearly every industry in the U.S. economy, but for the defense industrial base, the potential for international growth must be tempered with the need to protect U.S. national and economic security and critical defense technologies. In "Globalization and Its Implications for the Defense Industrial Base," Terrence Guay, clinical assistant professor of international business at Smeal, explores how globalization has changed the defense industries around the world and offers a recommended path that will leverage the economic opportunities globalization presents for the defense industry and also mitigate potential security risks. Center For Digital Transformation Hosts Spring Research Forum
To begin to formulate research opportunities and build its community of practitioners and scholars, Smeal's Center for Digital Transformation held its semiannual research forum on May 15 and 16. Speakers from such firms as Booz Allen Hamilton, Deloitte, Google, and Metaweb addressed topics including the privacy risks in recommender systems, enterprise risk management, and frontiers in multi-protocol wireless encryption. Smeal Honors Five For Advising And Teaching
Five Smeal advisers and educators recently received 2006-2007 Fred Brand Jr. and Dillwyn P. Paiste III awards, the college's highest honors for advising and teaching. Marilyn Blanco, instructor in supply chain and information systems, Jennifer Chang Coupland, clinical assistant professor of marketing, and Tim Simin, assistant professor of finance, received the Dillwyn P. Paiste III Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. Tom Robbins, graduate assistant and Ph.D. candidate in supply chain and information systems, received the Paiste Award for Excellence as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. Reminder: Smeal Trading Room To Host Stock Market Summer Camp
Smeal is hosting a resident and day camp this summer for high school students entering grades 10 through 12 who are interested in learning about finance and the stock market. "Stock Market Madness" will be held July 15 through 20 on Penn State's University Park campus. Campers will spend the week in Smeal's state-of-the-art Trading Room, learning the basics about financial management from Smeal finance professors and students. Quality And Manufacturing Management Teams Pitch Product Ideas To Elmer's
In collaboration with Elmer's Products, Inc., five teams of students enrolled in the Quality and Manufacturing Management program, administered jointly by Smeal and the College of Engineering, explored new product development experiences for two semesters with the goal of complementing the strategic marketing directions of Elmer's. On May 1, the teams pitched their products--including marketing plans, investment opportunities, manufacturing logistics, prototypes, and environmental and legal considerations--to representatives from Elmer's and other business, manufacturing, and management experts.
