Welcome
to the Smeal Zine!
Here's the latest issue of SMEAL Zine, a monthly electronic magazine
designed to keep alumni and friends in touch with the latest news
and information from Penn State's Smeal College of Business's
nationally ranked programs and world-renowned research centers.
UNDERSTANDING
E-BUSINESS
The eBusiness Research Center (eBRC) just completed a path-breaking
book, Pushing the Digital Frontier: Insights into the Changing
Landscape of eBusiness, published by AMACOM. Faculty and business
leaders from across the country, including 10 Smeal faculty, addressed
the latest research findings and examples of organizations that
are transforming themselves from traditional firms to successful
e-businesses. The book provides insights on how organizations can
leverage old economy fundamentals in the new world, and restructure
for e-responsiveness. Meet the co-authors online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/may01/pushing.html.
MBA
STUDENTS TAKE TOP SPOT IN MBA COMPETITION
A team of our first-year MBA students took top honors in the annual
"Big 10 MBA Case Competition," held at Ohio State University.
Read about the victory online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/may01/big10.html.
STUDENTS'
PLEDGE ENHANCES DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP
Even before they graduated on May 13, seven members of the Minority
MBA Association were already helping future generations of MBA students.
The students made a pledge of $14,000 to the "Vernis Welmon
Endowment for MBA Minority Affairs and International Programs."
For more about the students, Vernis Welmon, and Virginia and Harvey
Kimmel, the couple that established it, go online to http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/may01/welmon.html.

FACULTY

The Wall Street Journal covered James McKeown's research
demonstrating the bright side if a "going-concern" statement
is attached to the standard financials of an IPO. The story is online

BusinessWeek devoted a story to Valuepro.net, a free Internet
Web site, created by three Smeal faculty, that helps investors calculate
a stock's value. The story is online at http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/innews/may01/cashflow.html.
