Smeal College, Penn State Benefactor Dies At 84

Frank P. Smeal, who with his late wife Mary Jean made the founding gift to name the Mary Jean and Frank P. Smeal College of Business in 1990, as well as numerous other contributions to Penn State University, died on April 8, 2003, at the age of 84. U.S. Steel President: Spring Undergraduate Commencement Speaker

John Surma (B.S. 1976), President of United States Steel Corporation, will speak at Smeal's spring commencement at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, in the Bryce Jordan Center. Retired Telecom Executive: MBA Pre-Commencement Speaker

John Zrno (M.B.A. 1969), who enjoyed a 25-year career in the telecommunications industry, will speak at Smeal’s MBA pre-commencement ceremony at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 11, in the HUB Alumni Hall. Specifically for the Smeal MBA community, pre-commencement precedes the May 17 commencement ceremony for all master’s candidates of the Penn State Graduate School. Alumni Pledge Supports Construction Of New Smeal Building

Edward R. (B.S. 1959) and Helen Skade Hintz (B.S. 1960) have made a $2 million gift toward the construction of the new Smeal building. Professor Named SIOP Fellow

The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) recently named David A. Harrison, Professor of Management, as a SIOP Fellow during its annual convention in Tampa, Fla. In receiving the honor, Harrison was recognized for his groundbreaking work on diversity, work/role adjustment, executive decision-making, and absenteeism, among other areas. New Spin-off Company Helps Reengineer Marketing

Smeal Professors Gary L. Lilien and Arvind Rangaswamy recently spun-off from Penn State DecisionPro, Inc., a company centered on their leading expertise in the emerging field of marketing engineering. DecisionPro is designed to help corporate professionals execute and track marketing programs and optimize the ROI of marketing. Smeal Celebrates Close of Grand Destiny, Start Of 50th Anniversary

The weekend of April 25-27 marked the end of the Grand Destiny Campaign (Smeal exceeded its campaign goal with $73 million) and the start of the College’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration, which received a rousing kickoff on Blue-White Saturday at the future site of Smeal’s new building. U.S. News Ranks MBA Program Among Nation's Best

The Smeal MBA Program ranked 33rd overall and 13th among public universities in the 2004 edition of U.S. News and World Report's "Best Graduate Schools," compared to 43rd overall in last year's ranking. The Supply Chain and Information Systems Program at Smeal ranked 7th in the nation in the category of Supply Chain/Logistics. Annual eBiz Workshop To Focus On Innovations

Leaders in industry and academia will gather on May 14 and 15 in Philadelphia for the fifth annual eBRC Academic Workshop. This year's event, centered around "Innovations in Customer Loyalty, Retention, and Advocacy: Powered By Technology," will be an interdisciplinary dialogue, culminating in a published white paper. Smeal Students Earn Diversity Awards

Smeal undergraduates won four of the six annual awards presented by Penn State’s Multicultural Research Center. Henry Calderon (Operations & Info. Systems Mgmt.), Candice Isaac (Marketing), Chris Thomas (Economics), and Makini Young (Operations & Info. Systems Mgmt.) each won awards. Smeal senior Gregory Jenkins (Operations & Info. Systems Mgmt.) also earned a Fannie Lou Hamer / W.E.B. DuBois Service Scholarship from the Forum on Black Affairs. Dr. David A. HarrisonProfessor of Management

Harrison teaches courses in organizational behavior, human resources management, and organizational research methods to undergraduate, MBA, and Ph.D. students, as well as executives. His primary research interests are in work/role adjustment - especially lateness, absenteeism, and turnover - time, executive decision-making, and measurement. Articles describing his research have appeared in Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Information Systems Research, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, and elsewhere.
