Trading Room Opens
Smeal College students are now experiencing the excitement of the global markets, thanks to the new Trading Room. The stock ticker in the Smeal College Trading Room officially started on April 20 during a gala event that featured a who's who from stock exchanges and investment banks. Leading Management Strategist To Join Smeal
Donald Hambrick, one of the world's top management strategists, will join the Smeal faculty as the new Smeal Chair in Management. "Dr. Hambrick is among the foremost leaders in strategic management, and is widely admired by faculty, students and executives worldwide. We are absolutely thrilled that he will be joining as our colleague," says Judy Olian, Dean of Smeal College. Dr. Hambrick is currently the Samuel Bronfman Professor of Democratic Business Enterprise at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business. MBA Program Offers Experience In Entrepreneurship
The Smeal College MBA program offers aspiring entrepreneurs course work and hands-on experience with start-up companies, through the Farrell Center for Entrepreneurship. Tim Murphy, who currently heads the Center, recently completed an interview with the Centre Daily Times on the entrepreneurship program at Smeal, including the Garber Venture Capital Fund that is run by Smeal MBA students. Students Earn Spot In National "HR Games"
For the second year running, a team of undergraduate students from Smeal College and the College of the Liberal Arts placed first in the regional competition of the annual "HR Games" and will move on to the National Human Resources Collegiate Competition. A team representing Penn State won both the regional and national titles last year in the first annual "HR Games." Faculty Honors
The J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board recently selected Dr. Austin Jaffe for the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in Property Systems in the Centre for Property Studies at the University of New Brunswick. Jaffe is director of the Institute for Real Estate Studies in Smeal College and the Philip H. Sieg Professor of Business Administration. Awards in the Fulbright Distinguished Chairs Program are viewed as among the most prestigious appointments in the Fulbright Program. Rankings Update
The 2002 edition of "Best Graduate Schools" from U.S. News & World Report ranks Smeal College's MBA 35. The issue also ranks four of the specialties offered in the college in the top 25. Commencement
Henry B. Schacht, chairman and CEO of Lucent Technologies, will be Smeal College's undergraduate commencement speaker and he will receive an honorary doctorate of humane letters. Commencement takes place at 7 p.m., Saturday, May 12 in the Bryce Jordan Center. Dean Judy Olian will be the commencement speaker for the University's Graduate School ceremony, which takes place 1 p.m., Sunday, May 13, in Eisenhower Auditorium.
Cyberlaw Seminar
The emergence of the Internet has ushered in a host of legal issues that have revolutionized how executives must do business with regard to intellectual property, privacy and governance. That's the focus of an upcoming seminar, "Cyberlaw and Information Policy-How They Impact Your Business," which is co-sponsored by Penn State Executive Programs in Smeal College and the eBusiness Research Center (eBRC). Vote Now For Alumni Council
Elections have started for the Penn State Alumni Association's Alumni Council. Alumni Association members can vote on the paper ballot that was mailed earlier or they can vote online at http://www.alumni.psu.edu. Look for "Council Online Voting." There are 18 candidates running for the Alumni Council including Chet Lucido, who is a graduate of Smeal College.
Elections For Board Of Trustees
The biographical sketches and the position statements of the 2001 nominees for the Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees were recently mailed. Ballots must be received by 9 a.m., May 10. There are five nominees on the ballot and one, Steve A. Garban, is a graduate of the college.
