Austin Jaffe, Chair, Department of Insurance and Real Estate:
Austin Jaffe took over as chair of Smeal's Department of Insurance and Real Estate in January 2006. He also serves the college as Philip H. Sieg Professor of Business Administration, director of the Institute for Real Estate Studies, and director of International Programs. In the latter capacity, Jaffe oversees the Smeal MBA Program's Global Immersion experience and the study abroad excursions of Smeal undergraduates. His research interests include real estate financial analysis, the economics of property rights, the economic effects of legal institutions, the conceptual basis of property, and real estate computerization.

James Thomas Appointed Dean Of Smeal
James B. Thomas, dean of the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST) at Penn State since its creation in 1999, will return to his roots at the University through his appointment as the next dean of the Smeal College of Business. Thomas will assume his new deanship on July 1. A specialist in strategic management, organizational decision-making, and information technology, Thomas had previously served on Smeal's faculty for 12 years between 1987 and 1999, culminating in appointments as senior associate dean and professor of management and organization. MBAs Win Logistics Case Competition
A team of Smeal MBA students took first place in a prestigious supply chain case competition for the third time in four years. MBA students Sachin Arora, Erin Bauer, Andrew Davis, Mani Gokarnesan, Joe Mrozinski, and Robert Watson beat out teams from eight of the best supply chain schools in the world to win the ninth annual FedEx Freight International Graduate Logistics Case Competition, held Feb. 23-25 at the University of Arkansas. Bauer credits the team's diversity with helping them "to frame a more well-rounded strategy than the other teams and to touch on issues such as developing a marketing plan and presenting a method for calculating return on investment." CSCR Co-Sponsors Annual Supply Chain Symposium
Some of the world's leading supply chain experts from both business and government will be on hand at the 16th annual R. Hadly Waters Supply Chain Symposium on April 27 to discuss business practices and processes for remaining adaptable to today's market demands. This year's symposium, "Strategies for Supply Chain Transformation," will emphasize strategic leadership, perspectives on transformational change, and alternative supply chain strategies. One of the keynote speakers is Roger W. Kallock, former deputy under secretary of defense for logistics and materiel readiness. The event is sponsored in part by Smeal's Center for Supply Chain Research and the Department of Supply Chain and Information Systems. New Alumni Director Aims To Grow Alumni Involvement In Smeal
Anne Johnson has joined Smeal as director of alumni relations, bringing with her some new and creative ways to engage alumni in the activities of the college. Johnson's main goal in her new position is to leverage the varied strengths of the college's alumni and match them to the current needs of Smeal. One of her first initiatives is a recruitment tailgate prior to the Penn State Blue-White football scrimmage on April 22. High-achieving prospective students and their parents have been invited to attend and meet with current students, faculty, and alumni. Smeal To Co-Host Global Trading Competition
Smeal and Financial Trading System (FTS) are sponsors of the April 21-22 Global Trading Competition, an online event open to students around the world. Competitors will analyze case situations involving financial markets such as fixed-income securities, equities, options, and forward contracts, and then make markets and trade securities over a fixed trading period. Unique Academic Competition Requires Serious Study And Quick Thinking
On April 11 at the Penn Stater, months of preparation and research by 10 Smeal undergraduates will culminate as they take the stage to compete in the sixth annual Smeal Survivor competition, the college's one-of-a-kind CEO simulation. The contestants will be required to think on their feet, posing as CEOs of multibillion-dollar global corporations to answer questions about how their companies should respond to complex business crises and world events. Reminder: Philadelphia Events Offer Networking And Professional Development
Two unique Smeal events on April 6 will offer Philadelphia-area alumni the opportunity to hear from faculty and top corporate executives in risk management while reconnecting with old friends and networking with new faces. An executive forum will begin at 1 p.m. at The Westin Philadelphia with Smeal faculty members Keith Crocker, Raghu Garud, and J. Edward Ketz. The forum will be followed by a reception and a panel discussion featuring Joan Amble, executive vice president and corporate comptroller, American Express Co.; J. David Rogers, CEO, J.D. Capital Management LLC; Bradley Wood, senior vice president of risk management, Marriott International, Inc.; and Lizabeth Zlatkus, executive vice president and CFO, Hartford Life, Inc. Symposium Exposes Students To Sports Business Careers
Penn State's director of athletics joined a representative from the PGA Tour and sporting-event sponsorship and marketing executives last week at Smeal to discuss with students how to leverage their business degrees in the world of athletics. The inaugural "Penn State Smeal College of Business Sports Symposium" included a panel discussion on the current state of the sports industry and an exploration of career options that are available to business students in a variety of disciplines. Business Building Wins Construction Partnering Award
Smeal's Business Building won a major partnering award this month for the construction company that built it. At its annual national convention in Palm Springs, Calif., the Associated General Contractors of America (ACG) presented Gilbane Building Co. with a 2006 Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Special Recognition Award for the company's work on the Business Building. The Smeal project was the only nongovernmental structure to win a Black Award this year and only the second such winner in the award's history.
