Picower Foundation Funds Innovative Freshman Seminar
Smeal has been awarded a $1 million grant from The Picower Foundation—founded by Jeffry Picower (B.S. 1963) and his wife Barbara—for the development of an expanded seminar for first-year business students. The Picower Embark Program (PEP) seeks to improve transition and retention from high school to college, provide personal development in the areas of diversity, ethical behavior, business leadership, teamwork, and community service, and enhance the inclusion of underrepresented students in the full spectrum of business majors and careers. Smeal's Hambrick To Receive Academy Of Management Award
Smeal Chaired Professor of Management Don Hambrick has been selected to receive the prestigious Irwin Outstanding Educator Award from the Business Policy and Strategy Division of the Academy of Management. Hambrick's peers selected him for this honor because of the overall contributions he's made to the education of future scholars in strategic management. CSCR To Host All-Star R. Hadly Waters Symposium
Leaders in third-party logistics, transportation, consumer products, start-ups, consulting, and academia will be at University Park on April 11 for the latest R. Hadly Waters Symposium. Entitled "Home Run Lessons from Supply Chain All Stars," the symposium will feature sessions on enhancing logistics productivity, the U.S. transportation infrastructure, strategic supply chain management planning, and linking supply chain management to financial performance, among others. Award Winners Named From Smeal
Jeffrey M. Sharp, Associate Professor of Business Law, recently received the Milton S. Eisenhower Award for Distinguished Teaching, the University's highest teaching honor. In receiving the award, Sharp was recognized for his engaging charisma, understanding of today's students, and his natural ability to explain complex law concepts in a concise manner. Gus Colangelo, Assistant Professor of Management; Raeshel Ziegler, Academic Counselor; and Patricia Wollan, Doctoral Candidate in Finance, recently received Fred Brand, Jr. Awards from Smeal. Named after a 1932 Penn State alumnus who enjoyed a long and prestigious career in the insurance field, the Fred Brand, Jr. Awards are Smeal's highest honors in teaching and advising. Smeal 50th Anniversary Blue-White Kickoff: You're Invited
Throughout this year and into the next, Smeal will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its founding with several exciting events. Kickoff for the yearlong "Building On 50 Years" is on April 26—the Saturday of Blue-White Weekend before the football scrimmage—at the corner of Park Avenue and Shortlidge Road. You're invited for a glimpse into Smeal's future. Eleven Smeal undergraduate students are set to assume the role of CEO on April 3 in Smeal Survivor III, a fast-paced competition that requires students to present strategies for confronting an ever-changing global business environment and respond to challenging questions from a panel of corporate judges. | Dr. Donald C. Hambrick |
Smeal Chaired Professor of Management
Hambrick is the author of numerous articles, chapters, and books on the topics of strategy formulation, strategy implementation, executive staffing and incentives, and the composition and processes of top management teams. His book, "Strategic Leadership: Top Executives and Their Effects on Organizations," is extensively used by scholars of executive leadership, and he also conducted the widely noted worldwide study of executive leadership, "Reinventing the CEO." Along with serving as President of the Academy of Management (1992-93), Hambrick has served on the Board of Directors of the Strategic Management Society and on the editorial boards of numerous major scholarly journals in his field.
