Welcome
to the Smeal Zine!
Here's the latest issue of SMEAL Zine, a monthly electronic magazine
designed to keep alumni and friends in touch with the latest news
and information from Penn State's Smeal College of Business' nationally
ranked programs and world-renowned research centers.
HONOR
SYSTEMS SHOULD STAY
Right now is a critical time for colleges and universities to address
the issue of academic integrity. Campuses should not abandon their
honor systems in the wake of some recent highly publicized cheating
scandals across the nation, says Linda K. Treviño, professor
of Organizational Behavior and Chair of the Department of Management
and Organization. She co-authored an article on the topic for a
recent issue of Academe. Read about her findings online at www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/feb02/honor.html.
NEW
CHAIRMAN FOR ACCOUNTING
Dan Givoly, an internationally recognized authority on accounting
and financial reporting, will become the new chairman of the Department
of Accounting. He is Professor of Accounting at the University of
California -- Irvine's Graduate School of Management, and recently
served as the Chairman of the Financial Standards Accounting Board
in Israel (1996-1999), the accounting standard-setting body of that
country. He previously held faculty positions at Northwestern University,
Columbia University, and Carnegie-Mellon University, and was Chairman
of the Accounting Department at Tel-Aviv University. He will assume
his new duties at the beginning of the coming academic year. Learn
more about Dr. Givoly online at www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/mar02/givoly.html.

RETAIL
LECTURESHIP SERIES STARTS
Retired Sears' chairman and CEO Arthur C. Martinez will present
the inaugural address in a new lectureship series at Smeal College
focused on the retail industry. The presentation is the first in
the new "Melvin Jacobs Retail Leadership Lecture Series,"
a tribute to Melvin Jacobs, a 1947 graduate of Penn State and former
chairman and CEO of Saks Fifth Ave. His wife, Rosalind "Roz"
Jacobs, and daughter, Peggy Learner, endowed the series. The event
is scheduled to take place at 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, in the
Assembly Room of the Nittany Lion Inn. It is free and open to the
public. More details are online at www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/mar02/searsceo.html.
SMEAL
SURVIVOR
Survivor is back on CBS and is returning to Smeal College. Smeal's
Survivor puts 21 students in the roles of CEOs with the task of
navigating an ever-changing business landscape twenty-five years
into the future. And, just like the hit television show, participants
are "voted off" by a panel of esteemed judges. Read about
the upcoming event online at www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/mar02/survivor.html.
