Student Business Groups Top Fund-Raisers At THON
Two student organizations associated with Smeal topped the list of independent-organization fund-raisers at this year's Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON). Phi Gamma Nu raised more than $61,000, giving the co-ed national business fraternity the highest fund-raising total among independent organizations for the 16th straight year. Women in Business, a professional development organization of about 150 female Smeal students, came in second place, raising more than $56,000. Study: Consumers Distort Information To Support Their Preferences
A new report co-authored by Margaret Meloy, assistant professor of marketing at Smeal, finds that the order in which people receive information about two similar products has a strong influence on their evaluation of those products. According to the report, which appears in the March 2006 issue of the Journal of Consumer Research, consumers are very likely to positively support a product brand that first appears to show superiority in its category. Consumers may even choose an inferior product if the earliest information they receive about it is positive. For more on the findings, visit http://www.smeal.psu.edu/news/releases/feb06/meloy.html.

Smeal Professors Weigh In On UAE-U.S. Ports Controversy
Two Smeal professors recently weighed in on the controversy surrounding the decision to allow a United Arab Emirates company to take over operations of six U.S. shipping ports. John Spychalski, professor of supply chain management and editor of Transportation Journal, warns that politicking is likely to interfere with the ultimate decision. Terrence Guay, clinical assistant professor of international business, remarks that, should the deal go through, the United Arab Emirates will not be the only foreign company to operate in the United States. Smeal Accounting Expert: Enron Defense Has A Chance
The trial of former Enron executives Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Skilling, charged with nearly 40 counts of conspiracy and fraud, started last month in Houston. J. Edward Ketz, associate professor of accounting at Smeal, warns that, "with the announced strategy of Skilling's lawyer, Daniel Petrocelli, there is a chance that a jury will find Skilling not guilty." Ketz adds that he hopes "the prosecutors are able expose the untruths in the strategy and convince the jury. The investing public's pocketbooks need them to do just that."
