Smeal Students Take First At University Of Toronto Trading Competition
Second-year MBA students Bradley C. Barnhorst and Matthew Shopp, along with undergraduates Sachin Aggarwal and Jay Hammarstedt, recently defeated more than 20 other teams from colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom to win the $10,000 first-place prize at the University of Toronto’s Rotman International Trading Competition. Cataldo Named Head Of Penn State Executive Programs
Patrick A. Cataldo, Jr., whose career spans more than three decades and has included executive positions with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) and its subsidiary Telcordia Technologies, The Home Depot, Bellcore, Digital Equipment Corporation, and Honeywell Information Services, has been named associate dean of Penn State Executive Programs. Farrell Center Director Named To National Innovation Initiative
Anthony Warren, director of Smeal’s Farrell Center for Corporate Innovation and Entrepreneurship, has been named to the 2004 National Innovation Initiative, a yearlong project co-chaired by IBM chairman and CEO Samuel J. Palmisano to develop an agenda to drive innovation in the United States. Warren will contribute his expertise to the 21st Century Working Group, which among other tasks is seeking to stimulate innovation across the services sector. Student’s Handbag Business Becomes THON Moneymaker
Smeal College senior Arica Rudnick has translated the marketing expertise that landed her a summer internship into a burgeoning handbag business that is now benefiting Penn State’s annual IFC/Pahnellenic Dance Marathon. Calling herself the PSU Bag Lady, Rudnick markets trendy purses and cosmetic handbags to sororities, clubs, and other organizations, with 20 percent of the proceeds going to THON. Conversation On Leadership Highlights April 29 NYC Alumni Event
Smeal alumni in the New York area are invited to join the Smeal Board of Visitors to celebrate the grand finale of the college’s 50th anniversary celebration on April 29. The event, to be held at the headquarters of Suisse First Boston Corporation in Manhattan, will feature “Identifying Leadership in Today's Corporate World,” a moderated discussion between John Thompson, vice chairman of executive search firm Heidrick & Struggles, and Randy Battat, president and CEO of wireless Internet company Airvana. Smeal Building Campaign Update
Fundraising for Smeal’s new 210,000-square-foot building continues. The college has raised $20.2 million of the $29 million needed to achieve the private fundraising goal and complete the building. The University has committed the remaining $39 million. | Karen Jansen |
Assistant Professor of Management
Karen Jansen’s research explores the process and impact of change on an organization's employees. Her ongoing research focuses on identifying momentum triggers and how momentum trends influence individual attitudes and behavior. She is also interested in the evolution of employee fit with various aspects of the work environment. Jansen teaches courses on strategic human resource management, change, and research methods at the Smeal College, and she also advises the student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management.
