Incorporating Deep-Level Diversity into Work Design
Smeal’s David Harrison and Stephen Humphrey look at the social nature of tasks and how deep-level diversity characteristics play a role in team design at work. Bringing together their expertise on diversity and work design, the researchers address issues such as typecasting and status differences and offer suggestions for “optimal diversity” in team settings.
Skip-Level Leaders Inhibit Employee Voice
A recent study focuses on what the researchers call “skip-level leaders,” any leader above one’s immediate supervisor, and how these leaders can inhibit employee voice within organizations. Linda Treviño, Distinguished Professor of Organizational Behavior and Ethics at the Penn State Smeal College of Business, and James Detert from Cornell University study both direct and indirect influences and look at how and why these patterns play a role in impacting employees voice.
