Smeal College Faculty Ranks Among Nation’s Best In Research Productivity

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- In a new study of research productivity of faculty members at 51 leading U.S. business schools, Penn State’s Smeal College of Business is among the top 30 in five academic disciplines, and is one of only 15 schools in the nation to place among the top three in at least one area.

Smeal’s ranked disciplines include Accounting (20th), Information Systems (30th), Marketing (19th), Organizational Behavior (23rd), and Strategy (3rd).

The study, “Business Research in Eight Business Disciplines,” measured the quality of academic faculties nationwide through the method of citation analysis, which is a process that measures the number of times a published article has been referenced in other articles worthy of publication. To be considered in the study, business schools must have been included at least once in the 25 most recent rankings lists produced by Business Week , US News and World Report , or Financial Times .

In a previous Academy of Management Journal study also investigating faculty research productivity, Smeal ranked 24th overall in the country and 13th among public institutions, with five of the college’s six departments in the top 20. That study gauged productivity by the number of pages published by school faculty in each journal during the selected time period.
