'PSU Night Out' Raises Thousands For United Way's September 11th Fund
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA-Undergraduate students in Penn State's Smeal College of Business raised $6,000 for the United Way September 11th Fund through some recent fundraising efforts in the local community.
Area restaurants, eateries and other establishments teamed with the undergraduate students and participated in "PSU Night Out" to raise funds for recovery efforts in New York and Washington, D.C. Participating businesses contributed $1 from each cover charge collected from patrons or from each meal served between 5 p.m. and closing on November 8. The special event raised $3,945. Contributions from student organizations across campus, combined with donations from faculty and staff, the Penn Smeal College Alumni Club and the Smeal College Student Organizations, totaled an additional $2,055.
"This was a great way to mobilize the undergraduate students in a unified fund-raising effort with area business and the University Park community and it allowed us to make a sizeable donation to the fund," says Nichelle Evans, a senior enrolled in Penn State's Smeal College of Business and Chair of the Smeal College Business Roundtable. The Smeal College Business Roundtable and the Smeal College of Business Student Council oversaw the student-led fundraising effort.
Participating establishments include The Allen Street Grill, Cafè 210 West, The Corner Room, The Dark Horse, The Gingerbread Man, The Rathskeller, Players Nite Club, The Phyrst, The Tavern, Sports Café & Grill, Lion's Den, Dante's Inc., and Zeno's.
"The United Way September 11 fund will disseminate 100 percent of the contributions to help the victims, families and communities affected by the attacks," says Jamie Smith, senior majoring in marketing and President of the Business Student Council in Smeal College.
