Chevron, Woertz Gifts Push Smeal College Toward New Building Fundraising Goal

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (July 29, 2005)—Chevron Corporation has pledged $10,000 and Patricia Woertz '74, Chevron executive vice president, has pledged an additional $40,000 in support of the new building at Penn State's Smeal College of Business.

Located at the corner of Park Avenue and Shortlidge Road, the 210,000-square-foot building is the largest academic facility on the University Park campus. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, it includes 22 undergraduate and MBA classrooms, six advanced business labs, 10 recruiter interview rooms, a café, an auditorium, an atrium capable of seating 400, an outdoor plaza, conference rooms, undergraduate and MBA commons, and numerous other amenities. Smeal faculty and staff moved into the new building in July, and classes will begin in the college's new home in late August.

Chevron is one of the world's leading energy companies, with business operations in approximately 180 countries around the globe. Woertz is responsible for directing Chevron's worldwide refining, marketing, lubricants, and supply and trading businesses.

Previously, Woertz served as president of Chevron Products Co., the company's U.S. refining and fuels marketing company, and as a vice president of Chevron Corp., a position she was elected to in 1998. A native of Pittsburgh, she graduated from Penn State with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Woertz was recently awarded the 2005 Distinguished Alumni Award, which is Penn State's highest award for an individual. Woertz is a member of the Smeal College Board of Visitors and she is annually recognized by Fortune magazine as one of the most powerful women in business.

To date, friends, alumni, and other supporters have committed nearly $29 million for the construction project, which broke ground in October 2003. Penn State's Board of Trustees has committed an additional $39 million in University capital improvement funds.
