Smeal College MBA Students Win At Logistics Case Competition
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- Six students in the Smeal College of Business MBA Program at Penn State University recently took top honors at the 2003 International Graduate Logistics Case Competition in Chicago.
The Smeal team of Fred Bedore, Chris Garbarino, Rich Herman, Ken Rule, Andres Ken Shuyama, and Georgeann Tynyk finished ahead of the second-place team from Technological University of Darmstadt (Germany). Paul Poissant, Executive Director of Career Management and Corporate Relations within the Smeal MBA Program; Andy Gustafson, Assistant Professor of Business Administration; and Don Warsing, Assistant Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management, served as advisors to the Smeal team.
Says Poissant: “Our team’s effort sent a persuasive message to the companies and other universities in attendance that the Smeal College is home to both an outstanding supply chain management portfolio and a world-class MBA program.”
The University of Maryland and the University of Wisconsin-Madison tied for third in the two-day competition, with teams from Arizona State University, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, and the University of Minnesota also participating.
The competition called on participants to develop a strategic plan that could deliver a competitive advantage to Deere & Company’s worldwide logistics and supply chain organization and generate significant ongoing cost-reduction opportunities. Composed of four manufacturing divisions, Deere & Company produces agricultural equipment, commercial and consumer equipment, construction and forestry equipment, and power systems.
Upon receiving the Deere & Company case, teams were given 24 hours to read and analyze it, develop a solution, and create a presentation explaining their recommendations to a panel of senior-level supply chain executives from a wide variety of industries including General Mills, Guidant Corporation, Harley-Davidson, IBM, Masterfoods USA, Pfizer, Schreiber Foods, The HON Company, and W.W. Grainger.
