Seminar Teaches Smeal College Students Dining Etiquette

More than 80 undergraduate and graduate students in Penn State's Smeal College of Business Administration will learn the dos and don'ts of dining etiquette at the upcoming "Dining Etiquette Seminar."

The seminar, which is sponsored by PNC, takes place on Thursday, February 22, in the Nittany Lion Inn's Ballroom C. The four-course dinner starts at 6:30 p.m.

"The idea is to give students the opportunity to interact with business leaders and to learn the proper etiquette dining etiquette. This is a very popular program for the students," explains Sean Cook, Coordinator of Student Organizations in Penn State's Smeal College of Business Administration.

The event begins with a reception at 6 p.m. where students check in, pick up nametags, and find their location on a seating chart. There will be a cheeseboard with mustards and crackers in the lobby, and servers will bring around appetizers, including "buttered vegetarian egg rolls."

"The reception proves to be an aptitude test of sorts, as students attempt to balance small appetizer plates in one hand, while shaking hands and mingling, without spreading butter residue from the egg rolls to those they greet along the way," says Cook.

The dinner features prepared instructions on each course by Michael Conti, associate general manager of Penn State Hospitality Services, as well as an open forum for questions and answers throughout the evening. Tables are set with a full set of cutlery, so student can learn which piece is used for each course.
