Baumgartner, Yavas Named To Distinguished Positions At Smeal
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (August 30, 2004)—Hans Baumgartner, professor of marketing at Penn State’s Smeal College of Business, and Abdullah Yavas, a professor in the college’s Department of Insurance and Real Estate, have been named the Charles and Lillian Binder Faculty Fellow and the William Elliott Professor, respectively, in honor of their national and international reputations in research, teaching, and public service.
William Elliott, the former chairman of the Executive Committee of Philadelphia Life Insurance and a graduate of Drexel University, helped establish Penn State’s first endowed chair with his gift to Smeal in 1964. Charles Binder graduated from Penn State in 1912 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering.
Baumgartner’s research interests are in the areas of consumer behavior and research methodology, with a focus on how consumers form judgments about objects and events and how these judgments influence actual behavior. An editorial board member of the Journal of Consumer Research and International Journal of Research in Marketing, his current research projects include a study of the role of anticipatory and anticipated emotions in consumer behavior and an investigation of the impact of response styles on survey responses. He is a recent recipient of the 2004 Excellence in Research Award from the American Marketing Association.
With expertise financial contracting, agency problems, the economics of uncertainty, and experimental economics, Yavas is also research director of Smeal’s Institute for Real Estate Studies. He is an editorial board member of a variety of publications including the Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, Journal of Housing Economics, and Journal of Real Estate Research.
