Study: Use Markets, Not Regulations, To Increase Pharmaceutical Information

Creating market-based incentives through targeted tort reform is the best way to increase the quality and quantity of pharmaceutical information available to the public, according to a new article from Penn State's Smeal College of Business. Its author argues that drug companies will be encouraged to conduct more tests and more fully disclose the results if by doing so their potential for legal liability is reduced.

Smeal Alum Stengel To Speak At Smeal Commencement

James Stengel, global marketing officer for Procter & Gamble and a 1983 graduate of the Smeal MBA program, will deliver the commencement address at this year's Smeal College of Business graduation ceremony, set for 1:30 p.m. on May 14 in the Bryce Jordan Center. The college will confer bachelor's degrees on about 1,100 graduating seniors.

Smeal Announces Global Trading Competition Winners

About 60undergraduate and MBA students from around the world came together on the Internet on April 21 and 22 to test their skills against each other in the Global Trading Competition, organized by Penn State's Smeal College of Business and Financial Trading System.

Nittany Lion Venture Capital has selected eight MBA students to manage the $5 million Garber Venture Capital Fund for the 2006-2007 academic year. The new leadership team will pursue investment opportunities in early-stage, high-growth companies in return for an equity stake in the businesses.

MMM Students To Pitch Inventions To Mock Investors

Students in Penn State's Master of Manufacturing Management (MMM) degree program will present four new inventions to a panel of industry experts posing as venture capitalists looking for the next million-dollar idea. The mock investor presentations begin with product demonstrations at 10:45 a.m. on April 20 in 201 Keller.

Executive MBA Scholarship Available For Nonprofit Employees

The Penn State Smeal College of Business Executive MBA Program, which enters its fifth year in August, is offering a $20,000 competitive scholarship to be awarded to one incoming student or divided among multiple students who are also employees of nonprofit organizations. The submission deadline is May 10.

Xerox Awards QMM Program $25,000 Grant

The Xerox Foundation has awarded a $25,000 grant to support Penn State's Quality and Manufacturing Management (QMM) Program, which is administered jointly between the College of Engineering and the Smeal College of Business. The grant follows a $25,000 gift made previously by Xerox to QMM.

Multiple Honors For Smeal Marketing Club

The Penn State Student Marketing Association, a student group in the Smeal College of Business, was one of only three chapters to receive the Superior Chapter Award from the American Marketing Association (AMA) this year. All 126 AMA student associations around the country were eligible for the honor.

New Bronze Statue Adorns Hintz Plaza

A bronze statue by a prominent artist was erected last month in Hintz Plaza outside of the Business Building, home to the Smeal College of Business. A gift from Smeal alumnus Edward Hintz '59 FIN and his wife Helen, the sculpture is a life-size depiction of a woman walking through the plaza carrying a briefcase.

Two Students Named 'Smeal Survivors'

For the second time in its six-year history, Smeal Survivor ended in a tie Tuesday night, with two students each winning first place prizes. Robert Dinkelspiel, senior in management, and Kevin Shah, senior in bioengineering, remained deadlocked in first place after a tiebreaker round between them and Frank Howard, senior in accounting.

Student Groups Compete In 'Business Inferno'

Four student organizations from Penn State's Smeal College of Business will compete against each other in leadership and team-building exercises on April 9 at Shaver's Creek Environmental Center. Women in Business, a professional development organization of about 150 female Smeal students, is hosting the competition, known as Business Inferno.

Smeal MBA Ranked In U.S. News Top 40

Penn State's Smeal College of Business ranked 38th overall and 18th among public universities in this year's "America's Best Graduate Schools" rankings published annually by U.S. News & World Report. The program also ranked seventh in the nation in the discipline-specific category of Supply Chain/Logistics.
