U.S. Steel President John Surma To Be Smeal College Commencement Speaker

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- Recently appointed United States Steel President John Surma will be the spring undergraduate commencement speaker for Penn State's Smeal College of Business. Each of Penn State's colleges holds a separate graduation ceremony following the spring semester, with the Smeal event scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on May 17 in the Bryce Jordan Center at the University Park campus.

Surma, a 1976 Penn State graduate with a B.S. in accounting, was named to his current position in March. Prior to becoming President, he was Vice Chairman and Chief Financial Officer at U.S. Steel, a role he assumed when the company separated from USX Corporation at the start of 2002.

Surma began his career with Price Waterhouse LLP in 1976 and quickly rose through the ranks of the firm, eventually becoming Pittsburgh office leader at Price Waterhouse for Audit and Business Advisory Services, and national co-leader of the Products Advisory Group, where he was responsible for providing consulting services to major manufacturing and processing companies.

In 1997, Surma was named Senior Vice President of Finance and Accounting for Marathon Oil Company, which was followed by appointments as President of Speedway SuperAmerica LLC in 1998, Senior Vice President of Supply and Transportation for Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC in 2000, and President of Marathon Ashland in 2001.

Along with being a member of the Smeal College Board of Visitors, Surma is also a member of the board of Calgon Carbon Corporation, the University of Pittsburgh Katz Graduate School of Business Board of Visitors, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Pennsylvania Business Roundtable.
