Smeal College's David Harrison Named Fellow By Society For Industrial And Organizational Psychology

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- Dr. David A. Harrison, Professor of Management in Penn State University's Smeal College of Business, has been elected a Fellow by the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) for a career of distinguished contributions to the understanding of the psychology of work.

In presenting the honor at its annual convention in Orlando, Fla., SIOP noted that several of Harrison's research areas, including his investigations of team diversity, the experience of time, work/role adjustment, executive decision-making, and measurement, "have all pioneered new ways to look at and think about organizations." Additionally, in conferring the Fellowship, SIOP classified Harrison as a leader in uncovering the importance of time for understanding individual- and group-level processes, with his work on absenteeism and other forms of behavioral withdrawal serving as the "gold standard for conceptual clarity and methodological sophistication."

"It's a fantastic honor to be selected as a Fellow by my peers in SIOP," Harrison said. "The organization has long served as the source of theory and data about the effectiveness of people at work, as well as a bastion of progressive thinking within the American Psychological Association, and I'm proud to be a part of that history."

Harrison, who teaches courses in organizational behavior, human resources management, and organizational research methods to undergraduate, MBA, Ph.D., and executive-level students, has consulted with firms such as American Airlines, Anheuser-Busch, Federal Express, Ford Motor Company, GTE, Levi-Strauss, and State Farm Insurance, among others. Articles describing his research have appeared in Academy of Management Journal , Strategic Management Journal , Information Systems Research , Journal of Applied Psychology , Journal of Management , and elsewhere.

Harrison, who earned his B.S. from Bowling Green State University and holds an M.S., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, serves on the editorial boards of Academy of Management Journal , Organizational Research Methods , and Personnel Psychology . He is currently Associate Editor of Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes .
