Penn State Students Earn Spot In National "HR Games"
A team of undergraduate students from Penn State's Smeal College of Business Administration and the College of the Liberal Arts placed first in the regional competition of the annual "HR Games" and will move on to the National Human Resources Collegiate Competition.
This marks the second year, Penn State has won in the regional competition. A team representing Penn State won both the regional and national titles last year in the first annual "HR Games."
The Human Resources Collegiate Competition consists of a series of one-day matches between teams of up to three students representing various Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) student chapters at colleges and universities around the nation. The game is modeled after the popular television game show Jeopardy and student teams answer human resource questions similar to those found on the Professional in HR Certification Exam. The Area 1 competition-which includes New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New England-took place April 7 at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey.
After four matches, the team advanced to the semifinals and competed against students representing Temple University, Drexel University and the College of New Jersey. The team went on place first and to earn a berth at the national competition, taking place June 24-27 in San Francisco.
The members of the team included:
- Brooke Gray, a senior majoring in management from Hopewell, PA.
- Jarrett Laubach, a junior majoring in labor and industrial relations from Bethlehem, PA.
- Erin Worthen, a senior majoring in management from Wrightstown, PA.
- Brian Callery, a junior majoring in labor and industrial relations from Coatesville, Pennsylvania, is serving as an alternate for the team.
The team's co-advisors are Carolyn Fisher, director of HR for Auxiliary and Business Services at Penn State, and Karen Jansen, assistant professor of management in Smeal College.
During the national competition, the students will compete against teams representing six SHRM areas in the nation. The games occur as part of the annual Society for Human Resource Management Conference to be held June 24-27, which is attended by approximately 13,000 HR professionals from around the nation.
