UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (May 2, 2008) – Students in the Penn State Smeal College of Business MBA Program volunteered with a local charter school on April 25 to construct a playground for the new school.

Three dozen MBA students spent the day working on the project for the Young Scholars of Central PA Charter School in State College. They started from scratch, digging holes to secure the playground equipment, assembling sliding boards and swings, and laying down mulch.

At the end of the day, the playground was nearly complete and ready for the children's parents to finish the job the next day.

"Our MBA program seeks to develop principled leadership, and a leader's role includes giving back to the community where you live and do business," says Carrie Marcinkevage, Smeal MBA admissions director. "We know our students have the business acumen to find success in the corporate world; but coming together to accomplish a service project like this one shows that they also have the ability and desire to be leaders in their communities."

Smeal MBA students have numerous opportunities for community service throughout the academic year. In October, about 20 MBA students volunteered with Habitat for Humanity to help construct a house for a single mother and her three children. MBA students raised thousands of dollars for this year's Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON) and its fight against pediatric cancer. They have also volunteered in the past with Penn State Public Broadcasting and the University's Day of Service, among other organizations. Additionally, a community service project has been added to the second-year curriculum to practice principled leadership values and close out the students' Smeal experience.
