UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (May 3, 2006)—Penn State's Smeal College of Business ranks 32nd overall and 12th among public institutions in BusinessWeek magazine's inaugural ranking of undergraduate business programs.

Smeal ranks sixth among programs with enrollments of more than 3,000 and the college is ranked 12th overall by recruiters. The magazine also gave the school's job-placement numbers an A letter grade.

"These rankings underscore what our faculty and our recruiters already know: Smeal has a large pool of bright students who are well-prepared for successful careers," said Interim Dean Kenneth Lusht. "Our job placement success and recruiter ratings are particularly gratifying. They suggest that we're providing our students with the skills necessary to compete in today's marketplace."

BusinessWeek's undergraduate rankings issue and the related focus on undergraduate business schools on the publication's Web site feature significant coverage of Smeal. The cover story highlights the Nittany Lion Fund, the school's $4.7 million, student-managed investment fund, and includes a photograph of Smeal's new Trading Room. A story on recruiting by Merrill Lynch features a quote by a Smeal student who will be interning at the firm this summer.

The Web site also features a story written by a recent Smeal alumnus who started his own business and a mention of Smeal's writing and communications requirements.

The rankings are based on student and recruiter surveys along with assessments of academic quality, starting salary data, and the role of the school as a feeder to top MBA programs. The academic quality portion is based equally on the following criteria: average SAT/ACT scores, the full-time faculty/student ratio, average class size, the percentage of students with internships, and the number of hours students spend preparing for class each week.

Smeal's profile on BusinessWeek Online features further statistics and student quotes. It can be viewed at www.businessweek.com/bschools/undergraduate/06profiles/pennstate1.htm.
