Pittsburgh Steelers' Chairman Dan Rooney To Speak At Smeal
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (March 28, 2008) – The Center for Sports Business & Research at Penn State's Smeal College of Business will co-host Pittsburgh Steelers' Chairman Dan Rooney on April 7 for an interdisciplinary panel discussion on the sports industry.
"Sports Governance and Equal Opportunity: The Life's Perspectives of Pittsburgh Steelers' Chairman Dan Rooney" will begin at 3:30 p.m. in room 110 of Smeal's Business Building.
Joining Rooney for the discussion are Timothy Curley, Penn State athletic director; Terrell Jones, Penn State vice president for educational equity; and Stephen Ross, director of The Penn State Institute for Sports Law, Policy and Research at the Dickinson School of Law. Andrew Bergstein, associate director of the Center for Sports Business & Research, will open the discussion.
The panel discussion commemorates the recent publication of Rooney's autobiography, Dan Rooney: My 75 Years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the NFL. A book signing will precede the program at 3 p.m. Copies of Rooney's autobiography will be available for purchase.
Panelists will discuss the Rooney family's role in the NFL from several different perspectives. Curley will address the similarities and differences between the Rooney's role in NFL governance and the role of an athletic director in governing the Big Ten Conference. Jones will discuss the Rooney family's acts and promotion of NFL rules designed to increase diversity in front office management and coaching, and the implications of these initiatives for broader concerns about diversity and equity. Ross will tackle the Rooney family's role as extraordinary owners in governing the NFL, and whether the league's structure is well designed in light of the behavior of typical owners.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored with The Penn State Institute for Sports Law, Policy and Research, the John Curley Center for Sports and Journalism, and the Penn State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
