Smeal Up Two Spots Among Public Schools In BusinessWeek Rankings

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (March 3, 2008) – Penn State's Smeal College of Business rose two spots to No. 12 among public business schools according to BusinessWeek's 2008 ranking of U.S. undergraduate business programs.

Smeal is ranked 38th overall and fifth among Big Ten schools.

According to a survey of corporate recruiters, which accounts for 20 percent of the overall ranking, Smeal ranked eighth nationally. Recruiters were asked to identify the schools with the best graduates, most innovative curricula, and most effective career services.

In addition to the recruiter survey, the BusinessWeek rankings are based on a student survey (30 percent); median starting salary for graduates (10 percent); the number of graduates sent to BusinessWeek's top 35 MBA programs (10 percent); and an academic quality measure (30 percent), which includes SAT scores, the ratio of full-time faculty to students, average class size, the percentage of students with internships, and the average hours students spend studying each week.

Smeal ranked in the top 20 of all schools for internship placement and return on tuition investment.

The magazine also gave Smeal an 'A' letter grade for its facilities and service and job placement.
