Conference To Address Business Initiatives In Diversity
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (March 16, 2006)—The seventh annual S.T.A.R.T. conference, the Smeal College of Business' forum on diversity issues in business, will convene on March 24 on Penn State's University Park campus. This year's event will begin at noon at the Nittany Lion Inn.
Guest speakers from several international corporations will gather to share their insights and experiences in diversity issues and discuss ways to raise diversity awareness in the corporate world and increase respect for individuals in the workplace. Representatives from Boeing, General Electric, IBM, Northwestern Mutual, and Philip Morris will join diversity administrators from Penn State for the half-day event.
"The S.T.A.R.T. conference is an important element of the Smeal educational experience," said Interim Dean Kenneth Lusht. "Corporations today employ a vastly diverse workforce. Possessing awareness, understanding and a respect for colleagues, clients and communities is essential to succeeding in business and will be even more vital in the future, as our students leave Smeal and enter corporate America."
The S.T.A.R.T. conference was established in 1999 by a group of students who recognized the need for open dialogue with professional and corporate leaders in order to create a productive and respectful work environment. S.T.A.R.T. is an acronym for Striving Towards Awareness and Respect for Tomorrow.
Joining the participating corporations as sponsors of this year's conference are Kimberly-Clark Corp., Lockheed Martin, Shell, Siemens, and Geico.
