UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (June 19, 2008) – The U.S. Navy has awarded its 2007 Military Logistician of the Year honor to an alumnus of the Marine Corps Logistics Education Program (MCLEP), a series of courses for military and Defense Department logisticians led jointly for the past 10 years by Penn State Executive Programs and the Center for Supply Chain Research at the Smeal College of Business.
Cmdr. Stanley Dobbs, will receive the $5,000 Admiral Stan Arthur Award for Logistics Excellence on July 2 at the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Dobbs, an alumnus of MCLEP 14, is assigned to Strike Fighter Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Lemoore, Calif. He was chosen as the Military Logistician of the Year for demonstrating excellence in logistics planning and execution. His accomplishments and service to the fleet are being recognized for their dramatic impact on the Naval Aviation Enterprise and the F/A-18 Hornet community.
MCLEP courses are designed to introduce Marine Corps logisticians, as well as other military and Defense Department logisticians, to proven and emerging civilian industry best practices.
Led by faculty members from Smeal's top-rated Supply Chain and Information Systems Department, the courses emphasize logistics, supply chain management, change leadership, managerial development, information technology, and metrics for success. The content focuses on new and innovative commercial logistics concepts, products, and processes that can be tailored to support the military's logistics modernization.
"MCLEP provided me with great instruction that enhanced my abilities to pursue and achieve readiness improvements," Dobbs said. "My Penn State experience was value added in my career portfolio and I am proud to be an alumnus of the program."
Penn State Executive Programs and the Center for Supply Chain Research have been chosen by the Marine Corps University 17 times to lead MCLEP. This past year, they conducted two two-week courses on Penn State's University Park campus, and two five-day courses on Marine Corps bases in the United States and Japan.
